As you know we’ve been gearing up over here at The Bird House to make some big changes to our lifestyle. Working towards creating a simpler, lower stress, way of being sounds like it should be an easy task, but it’s actually a little trickier than you may think. You never quite realize it until you take everything away just how much you think you need, that you actually don’t.
Many of you know we’re saving like crazy for the move to Haida Gwaii. This means not one penny can go astray. You may be wondering how your money can seemingly disappear without you, but after examining the credit card bills, and bank statements, it was easy to find the trail of wandering dollars. The first thing I noticed was all the charges I put on my credit cards from my phone. One song cost $0.99, apps are usually about the same. It was amazing to see how fast those add up even if you only buy a few a month.
At first this was a huge challenge. I tried very hard to explain to myself that chocolate was a pleasure and not necessity. In fact so was cereal and bread as I am more than capable of making these things myself at home. Finding the time to make these things was also another challenge as this is my busy season and it’s hard to spend 16 hours a day working and make all your own food. I did it and I look forward to telling you how in future blogs.
The clarity this has brought me about how to design our simple life has been amazing.
The second thing I noticed was that all the money that would normally wander away on little things, could be put to use attacking a priority in my financial plan. If I could spend $0.99 at a time racking up my credit card then why can’t I spend $0.99 at a time paying it off. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Every little bit of change, every bit of money not set aside to buy my allowed groceries, or gas, has been put to use reducing my debt.
As much as I miss chocolate and the convenience of pre made foods, the satisfaction of knowing everything I have is being put into my goals gives me so much more pleasure. Seeing my account balance at $0.00 not only excites me, but motivates me to go out and earn the next deposit, knowing every action taken is one step closer to living us living our dream.
