Self Care. Something many people cringe at the thought of. One of the most important things we can do.
Health is something we often look to other people to provide for us.
In reality however, health is something we can only ask for help with.
The quality of one’s health relies solely on the individual, therefore I am responsible for my own health and you are responsible for yours.
First we need to understand the complete concept of health. To me being healthy doesn't mean you are not sick.
It means you feel good, and have energy, to do things in a pain free and uninhibited manner.
The way I see it, health is a 3 part system. Each part plays a vital role in the well being of the others. If one part breaks down the other two suffer. They key to choosing the best way to spend the precious few minutes you have to care for yourself is to know which part is in need of the most care.
The 3 parts consist of physical, emotional, and mental health.
Every time you influence the well being of one system the other systems benefit.
First and most important thing you can do to care for yourself is get enough sleep. Even power naps and days off devoted to rest can benefit your health.
Everyone has a different sleep aid. If you haven’t found yours yet and you're having problems with sleep I would suggest trying catnip tea before bed. It simple to make just add it to boiling water like you would any normal tea and let stand for about 10 minutes. Strain out the potential floaties and enjoy.
Reduce the way you react to stress. If you get that panicky, tight, horrible stress feeling then I know exactly how you feel. I was letting the stress of life put me into constant go mode to the point where I could feel the adrenaline.
The realization that I was going to wear out if I kept that up, quickly became apparent. I did however have months left of stuff to do before I could relax so I had to learn to handle my stress differently.
Now whenever I get that tight stressed out feeling, I take a deep breath and tell myself it’s okay to be stressed.
Move and stretch. These are the two next most important thing you can do to care for yourself. Your body depends on you to move it for the balanced health of all your internal systems.
I miss going to the gym and having a regular fitness schedule but for now I incorporate strengthening in my daily activity. This usually means doing arm curls with groceries while walking through the parking lot, but hey I’m getting stronger and embarrassing children all at the same time.
Stretching. Here’s where I really fall down and I pay for it. You can choose to add little stretches throughout the day to your daily routine, or you can take up yoga classes. Either way finding time to keep your body tissues pliable will help prevent future injury and make your life more comfortable.
There is no real wrong and right there is only wrong and right for you. Only you know what makes you feel good when eat it.
If you don’t know if your diet is causing you grief then focus on eating things you suspect make you feel like crap and experiment. eating none of that item then lots of that item to figure out what it really does to you.
Thanks to my ability to treat my body like a science experiment I’ve been able to stop the migraines that plagued me for decades.
An odd concept for some but lets face you are always with you. Wouldn’t it be a good idea for the person who is always with you to learn how to make you feel better when you're sore?
While it does in no way replace seeing a massage therapist it does make a difference.
